Concrete Patios

Benefits of a concrete patio versus paver patio

Benefits of Concrete patio versus paver patio
Concrete is more durable than pavers and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. Nevertheless, the maintenance requirements of both materials are similar. Both types of surfaces will require occasional cleaning with soap and water.

As far as installation time concrete will need more time to cure. Stamped concrete is decorative and provides pleasing aesthetics over plain unstamped concrete.  A concrete patio is less porous than paver stones and will not have gaps or cracks for weeds to grow through.  Concrete is more weed resistant, than pavers since the joints between the paver stones can allow weeds to grow. In wetter climates, weeds can easily grow in the spaces between the stones, which makes the surface prone to settling and means more maintenance and time consuming weed pulling.

A stamped concrete patio is decorative and costs less than pavers.  A concrete patio offers a seamless blend between the interior and the exterior living space. It is the perfect decorative flooring surface for an outdoor entertaining area. It is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns that make it easy to match other paving materials. In addition, it can be stenciled or engraved with patterns to add design elements to it. Unlike pavers, it is easy to maintain and clean. While pavers are easy to clean, they don't offer the same level of flexibility and adaptability as concrete. They can only expand or contract slightly and can only be repaired if major damages occur.

Concrete is also very durable. While it is considered a bland material, it can be finished to match the other materials, such as pavers.  A concrete patio can be designed to match outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and fire pits. This material is an excellent choice for those looking for a long-lasting patio.

Compared to concrete, pavers are more expensive.   However, if your old patio is level and does not have any structural problems, a stamped concrete overlay is decorative and about 30% less expensive than an entire new patio.

Concrete is more durable. Compared to paving stones, it is easier to install. In general, poured concrete is faster and easier to set than pavers. But, in certain situations, a concrete patio can be difficult to install, especially on a steep slope.

IS CONCRETE THE BEST MATERIAL FOR A PATIO?

We believe the answer is Yes!
Not because we are in the concrete business, but because of the following reasons.

Wood Patio
decks tend to splinter and unless sealed regularly their color fades and they rot out.

Pavers
are more expensive and higher maintenance because weeds grow between the stones and they always seem to shift and need to be readjusted.

Stone
- similar to pavers are higher maintenance and harder to keep clean

A concrete patio installed by an experienced contractor will last for 30 years or more with just some simple maintenance.

Some desirable qualities of concrete are:

It’s
durable. Concrete is very strong and long lasting.

It’s
versatile.   Many styles, colors, and decorative designs are possible

Low maintenance
.   Just clean and seal it every 1 to 2 years depending on traffic and weather.

Concrete is
environmentally friendly because it doesn’t have to be re-stained or painted, and trees were not cut down to make it.

Concrete is a
better value because it lasts a long time and will add value to your home.

How much does a concrete patio cost?

No two patio installations are exactly the same so it is impossible to provide an accurate quote without an onsite inspection.  An onsite inspection is required because a number of factors go into pricing a concrete patio.

FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE COST OF A PATIO
Patio size
The bigger the patio in terms of number of square feet the lower the price per square foot.  For small patios some contractors charge a minimum total rather than a per square foot price.

Condition of the ground
If the ground on which the patio will be poured is not stable and level more labor will be involved to grade or level the substrate upon which the patio will be laid.  If there is an older patio that needs demolition or other site prep work, the price will go up.  If the site on your property where you want the patio is not easily accessible for the required equipment, labor costs will be higher.

Complexity of Patio design
A concrete patio with color added, stamps patterns, borders or other design features will add to the cost.   A basic rectangular shape is easier to form and less expensive than a patio with curves or a custom shape.

New patio vs old patio
Starting from scratch to install a new patio will cost more than resurfacing or repairing an old concrete patio.  An older existing patio can often be repaired and made to look new again.  The costs of patio resurfacing are less than replacement because the added cost of complete demolition and removal of the old patio is not necessary.

CONCRETE PATIO COST VS. OTHER MATERIALS

A concrete patio costs less than patios made of pavers, stone, brick, or tile, for two two main reasons:

  1. More time and labor is required to place the pavers, stones, brick, or title
  2. Patios made from natural materials are more expensive

What is cheaper poured concrete or pavers?

A poured concrete patio is cheaper than installing pavers.  This is because a concrete patio slab is poured into a prepared form and finished within several hours.  But, pavers have to be placed and lined up individually one-by-one.  That process naturally requires a lot more labor and the cost of materials as previously mentioned are higher.

The best way to determine the cost of your concrete patio is to schedule an onsite estimate.  Call us now or fill out the Free quote form below.

You can use the price ranges below as a starting point when planning out your budget.

The average concrete patio is approximately 300 square feet and costs an average of $3,000 (about $10 per sq ft); depending on the factors outlined in this article, your cost will likely fall between $1,500 and $5,000.
